Etymology
Two forms of the p.n. seem to be involved, one from OE tūn denoting the settlement and the other from OE denu describing a valley (of the upper Windrush) in which it stood; (1) Codeston (which appears chiefly in Wo documents) was probably that part of the area which was granted to Worcester Priory and so was in Worcestershire; (2) Codesdene (which is described as a hamlet of Guiting in 1354 Ipm and a vaccary or sheep-fold in 1626 Inq) was probably the part which was held by Winchcomb Abbey and so remained in Gloucestershire; only the latter name remains and is now applied to the village. The exact location of the denu has not been determined; it was certainly in Gl and possibly a side valley of the Windrush or very likely that of the upper Windrush running north from the hamlet of Ford to below the village of Cutsdean. The first el. is thought to be an OE pers.n. Cōd , which occurs also in the local name Codswell (infra ), possibly in Cotswold (i, 2supra ), and Codesbyrig in Upper Swell (i, 227supra ); cf. Wo 1, 121.
