Etymology

Ashworthy Fm, Assheworth c. 1560Surv 12, 33, 14, Ashery Farm 1830 M, Mead Ashworthy & Scrub Ashworthy 1839TA , and, since the form is associated with Cromhall, also Asselworth 1327SR . The latter suggests that the name has the same origin as Ashleworth (152infra ), 'Æscela's enclosure', v. worð , worðig . It is possible that some spellings usually identified with Ashleworth belong to Ashworthy, and particularly those in deeds relating to St Augustine's, Bristol, which had land in Cromhall from c. 1150, Esseleswrd c. 1150 Monast, Aisselesword J ib, Asselworth 1287Ass 28d, Asshelworth 1492 Comp 92, 108, but it also had land in Ashleworth (Aug).
