Etymology

'Probably 'Hȳnci's dairy-farm', v. wīc . The spellings with Hinke - point to the recorded OE  Hȳnca , but the weight of evidence is against a non-palatalised form. If this is a related Hȳnci we have to assume assimilation of the gen.sg. -es (which occurs once) by the preceding palatal.
