Etymology

'Valley farmstead', v. cumb , tūn , called Abdale to distinguish it from Cassey Compton (187infra ) and other Comptons (Wa 299), etc.Apdale , Abdale has not yet been identified with any p.n. or local family name, unless it be a surname from Apedale (Sa), Apedale (St), Apedal 1278 Misc, or the f.n. Apedale in Henbury (iii, 136infra ).
