Etymology

'Farmstead on the hill' (here Meon Hill 254infra ), v. clopp , tūn , cf. Clapton (198supra ). It may be noted that Will ' Sakespere is mentioned as living here in 1248Ass , a very early reference to the local family of Shakespeare.
