Etymology

'Ford near the cliff or steep bank', v. clif , ford ; the ford was no doubt one which carried the road to Stratford on Avon across the R. Stour. The manor was given in 1099 to St Peter's Gloucester for the use of the camerarius or chamberlain (ME  chamberere , OFr  chamberier ); Francis Chamberlayne was party to a fine in 1625FF
