The Barton, Barton 1540MinAcct , Barton Feeldes 1540AOMB , Barton Graunge 1543 ib, Barton Grange 1544 LP, v. bere-tūn 'a grange' (of Cirencester Abbey); this word is often used of outlying granges of abbey and other estates (cf. Barton passim , esp. in the older towns like Tewkesbury, Gloucester, Bristol, etc.).
