Etymology

Archibalds (lost), Archebaldes 1434Knole 19, Archebaldys 1512 FF, Archbawdes 1578 ib, Archebaudes als. Erchenbawds 1637 Inq; this was the manor house of the family of Archibald (Erchembald 1235 Fees, Archebalde 1251 Inq aqd, Erchebaud 1273FF , etc.) and was said to have occupied a site in Dyer St. (cf. K. J. Beecham, History of Cirencester , 1886, BaddeleyC 93, 110, 141).
