Etymology

'Farmstead near the fortification', v. burh-tūn. The 'fortification' is doubtless the encampment named in Salmonsbury (infra ). The place is called 'on the Water' (Lat  super aquam ) from the R. Windrush which flows through the village, to distinguish it from Bourton on the Hill (236infra ). Cf. Bourton Way (164supra ).
