Etymology

'East farmstead', v. ēast , tūn ; it is east in relation to Weston Subedge (261infra ). The OE  form is clearly an error for ēasthǣma -(ge )mǣre 'boundary of the men of Aston', as Aston Subedge parish lies against the southern boundary of Church Honeybourne (Wo), which the charter is dealing with; on the elliptical form cf. Chipping Campden and Weston Subedge (237, 261infra ), v. hǣme , (ge)mǣre. The affix in Aston, Weston and Norton (262infra ) refers to their location below the steep escarpment at the northern extremity of the Cotswolds (v. ecg , 'edge, scarp'). The place was called Johannis because it was held at the time by Johannes le Brun of the Bishop of Rochester.
