Etymology

'Farmstead near the ash-tree', v. æsc , tūn . The hill is part of Bredon Hill (Wo 101), which is also called ye great hill of Ashton under hill 1627Hopt E. 5. On the OE  elliptical form Æschæma , v. hǣme 'dwellers' and cf. Weston Subedge (i, 261supra ).
