Etymology

'Æscel's enclosure', v. worð . The pers.n. is an OE  Æscel , as suggested for Ashling (Sx 60); it would be a diminutive of OE  Æsc and correspond, as Ekwall notes, to OG  Ascalo . Cf. Ashworthy (4supra ), from which it cannot always be separated, though the contextual associations make it probable that the forms cited here belong to Ashleworth.
