Etymology

Charlham Ho, Cherlham 1275, 1354CirenP , 1381MinAcct , Charleham 1540, 1542AOMB , 1600FF , 1626 Inq. 'The churls' meadow', v. ceorl , hamm , cf. Charlton (111infra ). It is of course difficult here and in other Gl p.ns. to distinguish hamm 'meadow, water-meadow' from hām 'homestead', but hamm is common in local ME f.ns., and topographically and chronologically it is more appropriate.
