Etymology

'Pēot's enclosure' from the OE  pers.n. Pēot , v. haga . The form Pat - does not appear until the name had been popularly associated with the word patch ; cf. also Phonol. § 44 (a ) for -ts - becoming -tch -, and § 42 (c ) for the -way forms.
