Etymology

Greenberry Lodge (6″) is La Grenebery , Grenebery , Greneberi 1283Takeley , 1348, 1373, 1379 EAS xix. 'The manor-house by the green,' v. grene , burh . Described as a viridem placeam and as planities or planistra and, in the first reference, as “the messuage of John Gybbe. ” Cf. Gibbs' Green infra 280. The court-baron of the manor of Writtle was held at Lordship Fm, the court-leet at “Greenbury on Little Green” (M ii, 61).
