Etymology

Rockhills olim Bockwood is Buckeworth 1227 Ch, Bukingwerth 1552 AD vi, Rokells 1553, 1582Ct , Rockwells 1619 M, Bockwood 1777 C, 1805 O. The identification of the two early forms is not certain and the etymology of the early name had best be left open. In 1254 (Ass ) William de Rokele had a wood in Wyllingehal Rokele and it is from his family that the later name arose.
