Etymology

'The ford where the Roman road from London to Colchester crosses the Lea,' v. stræt . The attributes distinguish this from Stratford-atte-Bowe (Mx), on the other side of the river. Langthorn from land called (on ) þone langan þorn (958 BCS 1037), Langethorn in Hamme (1199 FF), v. lang , þorn , cf. supra 94 n. Abbei and Monachorum from Stratford Langthorne Abbey.
