Etymology

Probably a compound of OE  wænn , wenn , 'wen,' and stede. The place is on rising ground above the Roding. Cf. Wanstead in Southwick (Ha), Wenstede 1210–2 RBE, Wanestuda 1212–7 ib., Wanbarrow Fm (PN Sx 275) and Wanborough (PN Sr 151, PN W 167), though the etymology of these is by no means certain.
