Early-attested site in the Parish of Ulting

Historical Forms

  • molend' de Bongefford 1285 Ass

Etymology

Bumford's Bridge (6″) is molend ' de Bongefford 1285Ass , Bonford mede 1502, Bunfordbrigge 1515, Bumford Bridge 1589Mowden . The forms are too late for any satisfactory suggestion. As the soil is mainly gravel and the neighbourhood was probably never marshy, any connection with OE  bune , 'reed,' is unlikely.
