Etymology

This is to be interpreted as 'Toll 's spring,' cf. Tollesbury supra 304–5. The second element is OE  funta, 'spring.' For the development we may compare Chadshunt (Wa), Ceadeles funtan 949 BCS 883, Chad (a )eleshunt c. 1023, 1043 (17th) KCD 916, 939, Cedeleshunt 1086 DB, Chedelesfont 1135 (1348) Ch, Chardelesfunt 1199 Cur, 1232Ass , and so with continual variation between hunt and funt , Boarhunt (Ha), Byrhfunt c. 960 (1200) BCS 1161, Borehunte 1086 DB, and henceforwards always h rather than f . Cf. also Chelhunte (1185 RotDom) for Chalfont (PN Bk 218). Tolleshunt d 'Arcy was held by Robert Gernon in 1086 (DB), by William de Tregoz in 1141 (Mandeville 142) and by John de Boys in 1292 (Ipm), whose family intermarried with that of Darcy (M i, 396).Robert Darcy had land in the parish in 1441 (Pat). Knights , perhaps because the parish comprised exactly one knight 's fee. v. FF i, 45. It was formerly called Little and “Bushes (corruptly Bishop ) because the Church lies upon a heath among Bushes” (M i, 392). Tolleshunt Major was formerly called Magna and later Beckingham from Stephen Beckingham (1543, M i, 390), v. Beckingham Hall infra 309. The parish was at one time known simply as Beckingham (e.g. 1830 EssPR iii). The modern attribute is derived from Malger , the Domesday undertenant.
