Etymology

Possibly 'thanes' valley,' v. denu . Cf. on þegna dene (Twyford, Wo) KCD 1368 and Thenford (PN Nth 61). The earliest form þecdene (in a late copy) must be an error. It is inconsistent with the later development. Mount from the hill on which the church stands, and Bruwes from the family of Robert de Brywes , Bruwes (1238 FF, 1248Ass ). Bosco or Bois from the family of Hugh de Bosco (1240 FF). The modern church is dedicated to St Mary, but the 1456 form suggests that it was formerly dedicated to St Botolph . For Gernun , formerly Paulyn , from Paulinus de Teydene (t. Hy 3 RBE), v. Theydon Garnon infra 84.According to Morant (i, 158) “William [Gernon] was of Stansted [Mountfichet], and dropping the surname of Gernon took that of Montfichet.
