Etymology
The river Roding is clearly a back-formation from the villages called Roding or Roothing (RN 345). Zachrisson (AN Influence 89) and Ekwall (PN in -ing 48) agree in taking these villages to represent the settlement of the people of Hrōða .Hroða would be a regular pet-form of one of the numerous common OE personal names in Hroð - or may have been used independently. It is clear that the settlement of the Hroðingas covered a large area (cf. Introd. xxii).
