Etymology

Cutlers Green is Bewcoudres alias Bewcothers vel Bewcoteres 1317Ct , Cutlers (Gre (e )ne )1336–1597Rental , croftam quondam Ranulphi le Coteler 1387Walden , Bewcoteleres 1430Ct , Beaucoters 1461MinAcct , lands called Valentine Cutlers 1549 Pat, Bewcouders alias Bewcotlers 1582Ct , Bencounter Green alias Cuttler 's Green t. Eliz ChancP. This name shows a confusion of manorial names. Cutlers is reminiscent of the famous medieval cudery industry of Thaxted. Cf. Ralph, Valentine and William Coteler (1370FF , 1373MinAcct ). According to Morant (ii, 440), Richmond's in the Wood hard by (infra 498) was held by William de Beucoudrey , Beaucoudre , Bewcoudre (1254Ass , 1317Ct ) whose family probably came from Beaucoudray (Manche) and it is clear that the names of the two families have become hopelessly mixed.
