Etymology

Originally 'Cēolf 's or Cēolwulf 's tun.' This was later replaced by a feudal name derived from the family of Hugh Curtpeil (1232 FF), Curpeyl (1248Ass ), Coppayl (1381SR ), Curpall (1429MinAcct ), Courpale (1461 ib.). For the identification v. EAS xviii, 68.
