Etymology

The first element may be either the OE  adj. stið , 'stiff,' applied to the soil of this stede, which is loam and clay overlying clay, or it may be the noun stiðe , 'lamb's cress' or 'nettle,' from the plentifulness of the plant. Cf. stede infra 590 and stiþeleighe (BCS 768).
