Etymology

Tumbler's Green is Tumbler Green (1777 C), Tumbleys (c. 1840 TA) and is probably to be identified with Stumbyltye 1382, Stumblystye 1391Ct . Interchange of green and tye is not uncommon. 'Stump-enclosure,' OE  *stumbel and teag . Cf. Stumbleholm (PN Sx 208), Stumbleholt (PN Sr 273), Ocstumbelden (in Wenden) 1387Walden , 'oak-stump valley,' Stumbilburgh (in Bocking) 1417Ct , and the field-name Stumbles in Black and White Notley and Chignall St James.
