Etymology

Stifford Clays olim Fletehall is Fleteshall 1412 FA, Flet(e)hall 1485 Ipm, 1557 M, Stefordcleys 1559 EAS vii, Claes 1545 LP, Stifford Clayes 1641 StiffordA. On the east side of the Mar Dyke which was once called the Fleet, v. fleot and Mar Dyke supra 8–9. Sir John Clay held the manor of Stifford in 1462 (M).
