Etymology

'The settlement of the Stybbingas ,' from OE  *Stybba , the base of Stepney (Mx) and Stibbington (PN BedsHu 197–8).v. Ekwall, PN in -ing 49 and Zachrisson, Some English PN Etymologies 20. Alternatively, it may denote 'dwellers among the stumps,' from OE  stybb .
