Etymology

Canfield Fm (6″) is Cannonfylde , Connonffeld 1517Rental , 1540Ct , Camfelde , Canfelde 1549Rental . Cf. also Canonmyll 1422 ib., Cannons Myll alias Brome Myll 1580Survey , Cannons land 1596Ct . The Augustinian canons of Little Dunmow Priory had land in the parish in 1235 (FF). The fuller form of the name survives in Cannon Wood (6″).
