Etymology

Hawkwoods (6″) is Hawk (e )wo (o )d (d )es 1444FF , 1449 IpmR, 1497 Ipm, 1581 Lancs. This was the home of the famous Sir John Hawkwood of the 'White Company' who fought at Poitiers under the Black Prince. Earlier members of the family who were connected with the district were Walter de Hauekwode (1262StJohn ) and Gilbert de Haukewode (1315 FF).
