Etymology

'Shelving leah,' v. scylf . Identical with Shelley (Ha, Sf, Sx, Y). The forms with Shen - create a difficulty. One can only suggest confusion with the common element sciene , 'fair,' found in Shenley (PN Bk 23) and elsewhere. For -le (i )gh 't v. Leigh infra 188–9.
