Etymology

'Salt-cottages.' Cf. Saltcoats supra 277. Saltpans were once common in the marshes and, in addition to these two names, relics survive in Abbots Hall Saltings and Copthall Saltings in Great and Little Wigborough and in a number of modern field- Names, such as Salcots (Brightlingsea), Salt Coat Marsh (Burnham), Home Saltcoats (Stowe Maries), Saltpan Marsh (Paglesham), Saltreach Field (Eastwood). v.
