Early-attested site in the Parish of Saffron Walden

Historical Forms

  • le Roos magna 1373 IpmR
  • le Rous 1321 MinAcct

Etymology

Roos Hill (6″), The Roos. Cf. le Rous , Roos , Ros (s )e (s )mad (e ), Ross Lane 1387Walden , (le ) Roos (se )1422 AD i, 1545FF , Roos alias Rose 1550 ib., The Ross (e )1605WaldenA , The Ross (e ) vulgarly called the Rost 1768 M. The forms are very late. This name and Roselands and Rose Fm supra 456, 478, like Brockholds olim Roos supra 513, Rouse Ley and Rouselands infra 641, 642 are probably manorial in origin. Gilbert de Ros held land in Walden in 1254 (FF). For the lost Roos we have an early form le Roos magna (1373 IpmR) and for Rouselands le Rous (1321MinAcct ), and the early forms of these two names are similarly to be interpreted. Cf. Ringer's supra 297, The Roast infra 549– 50 and Introd. xxxii.
