Etymology

No certainty is possible with regard to this name. It may be that the first element is the lost OE  hruna , 'tree-trunk.'Professor Ekwall would prefer in view of the OE form to take the first element as OE  rūn , 'mystery, secret,' with reference perhaps to a wishing-well.
