Etymology

Bolding Hatch is Bollinggehach '1297For , Bullinhach 1313 M, Bolinghatch 1573FF . This is an early example of the use of the term bolling , 'pollard tree,' v. NEDs. v. Hence 'gate by the pollarded tree.' Cf. further “leave to cut down and sell ten Bowlings ” 1652 ER xii, 216. The earliest record in NED is from 1691. The place was on the forest boundary.
