Goldencross

Early-attested site in the Parish of Rochford

Etymology

Goldencross. Cf. the King 's road leading front Goldhord towards Pakelesham 1248 FF, Goldhordescros 1425Harl , Gouldynge Crosse otherwyse called Gouldehorde 1578Rental . In the fine of 1248 there is mention of one Gilbert del Goldhord , and he doubtless took his name from some treasure-find made at the place called Goldhord in the same document. For such a place-name cf. Goldsworth, PN Sr 157. His family doubtless in turn gave their name to the cross, first Goldhordescross , later corrupted to Gouldyngecrosse and Goldencrosse . Cf. Goldings Field infra 620.
