Etymology

Appleford Fm, Appleford Bridge (6″). Cf. Atlingefordia a. 1272 Colch, Adelyngfordmell 1412 FA, Atlyngfordebrege t. Hy 8Rental , Applefoot Bridge 1824 G. The forms are too late for any certainty to be possible. The name may be from OE  Ætlingaford , 'ford of the people of Ætla ' or æþelingaford , 'ford of the princes.' Cf. Thenford (PN Nth 61) and Theydon supra 82.
