Etymology

This is from OE  cwenena-denu , 'women's valley,' or Cwēnan - denu , 'Cwena 's valley,' Cwēna being a pet-form of one of the OE  personal names in Cwēn -. There was early confusion of denu and dun , while the r -forms are due to AN dissimilation.
