Etymology

Deadman's Fm is Deadway 1777 C, 1805 O. This is a comparatively recent reconstruction of Deadaway Bridge (6″), itself a late corruption of Dod (de )were t. Hy 8AOMB , 1540MinAcct , Dod (d )warre 1547 Pat. 'Dodda 's fishing-weir,' v. wer . Cf. also Dodeberwe 1310Extent , 'Dodda 's hill,' the site of the gallows, somewhere in the neighbourhood.
