Etymology

Possibly 'Pylta 's hill,' v. dun . Pylta would be an unrecorded personal name from OE  pyltan , 'to thrust, drive,' ME  pelten , pilten , pulten . Alternatively, as the hill thrusts itself up in a remarkable way, at least for Essex, with marshland on three sides, the suggested adjective pylta may actually be descriptive of the hill. in le Plaish , i.e. in the marshland. v. plæsc .
