Etymology

'Forest land,' v. weald . In the reign of Henry II the manor was granted to Henry de Essex . His grandson Baldwin later granted it to Sir Philip Basset (AD , A 768, 774). North as opposed to South Weald in Chafford Hundred, infra 135. “It is sometimes called Nether -Weld ” (M i, 149).
