Etymology

The first element in this name would seem to be the lost English cognate of the well-attested OGer  Nebi , Nefi (Förstemann PN 861), which Förstemann suggests may be connected with ON  hnefi , 'fist.' Hence, perhaps, '(H )nefa 's valley,' v. denu .There was early confusion between neve and newe .
