Etymology

'Dwellings,' v. bur . atte Monte because “near the church here is an artificial Mount cast up to a considerable height” (M ii, 224). Sometimes known as Buers Sancti Johannis from the dedication of the church. This and other additions are made to distinguish this from Bures St Mary (Sf) on the opposite bank of the Stour (M ii, 224). See also Bures infra 420.
