Etymology

OE  *Mæccingas , 'the settlement of the people of Mæcca ,' a pers. name not on independent record, but possibly found in mæccanfer BCS 476, and cognate with OHG  Mac (c )ho (v. Ekwall, PN in -ing 47). The variation in the medial consonants is due to French influence, and has left its permanent mark in the doublet Messing infra 396 and in Messings Mead Plantation in this parish (IPN 102). v. Introd. xxiii.
