Etymology

'The valley of the people of Man (n )a ,' v. ing , denu . Cf. Canewdon supra 179. There was considerable variation locally in the pronunciation as late as the nineties when [mɑˑndən], [mæləndɑin], [mæləntɑin] and [mæliŋdən] could all be heard.
