Etymology

Leppingwells (6″) is Leffingwell (e )s 1561, t. ElizRental , 1578Ct , Leppingwell (s )alias Leffingwell (s )1636, 1647 ib., Leppingwelles Pasture c. 1840 TA. It owes its name to the possessions here of the family of Robert de Leffeldewelle (1302–44StJohn ), who is called Leffingwell in an Elizabethan transcript of the Court Rolls, Laurence leffyngwell (1461Ct ), William Leffingwell (1465 Add Ch ) and Alice Leppingwell (1508Rental ). The family took its name from a lost Liffildeuuella 1086 DB, Lefledewelle c. 1210 Bodl, Leffeldewell 1235Ass (p), 1285 ib., Leffeleswell 1258 FF (p), leffedewell 1285Ass , Lefheldewelle 1291For (p), Leffendewelle 1357FF (p). 'Spring or stream of a woman named Lēofhild .' Cf. DBLeuild . Their possessions extended into Gestingthorpe, Bulmer and Pebmarsh, and Liffildeuuella cannot be exactly located. It may have been the name of the small stream flowing past Levit's Corner in Pebmarsh, which may perhaps be a corruption of the name. v. further EAS xxi, 64–7.
