Etymology

Monksbury is Hallyngebere monach '1285Ass , Monketon Bury 1539 LP, manor of Monkysburye alias Halyngburye 1544 ib.'The monks' manor,' v. burh . According to Morant (ii, 514–15) the estate was given by Eudo Dapifer to St John's Abbey, Colchester, but the contexts of the above references show that the monks were those of Bermondsey. v. also Monk's Wood infra .
