Etymology

'The tun on the R. Lea,' v. supra 8. Identical in origin with Luton (PN BedsHu 156). Low because part of the parish lies low by the Lea. This attribute was dropped after a petition to the Great Eastern Railway had been carried nem. con. on 27th Nov. 1867 (Kennedy 411).
