Etymology

This is a difficult name, and one cannot be sure from about 1200 onwards whether forms transcribed with ct are really tt - forms, or vice versa . It is probably OE  leactun, '(kitchen)-garden.'Cf. East Layton (PN NRY 300), DB Latton , and Latton (W), DBLatone , 1241 FineR Latton . In such cases assimilation of ct to tt must have taken place before the development of the diphthong au from a or of ei from e before [χt]. Taney from the family of Richard de Tani who held the manor of Latton Hall (1270 M).
