Etymology

'Æffa 's bridge,' v. brycg . Æffa is a short form of names in Ælf -; cf. Ælfgar (e ) Æffan sune (Redin 59). This Æffa , whose name is found also in the neighbouring (lost) Æffan hecce KCD 813 (v. infra 66 n. 1), may also be connected with the Ælfweard who gave his name to Alderton Hall infra 65, if that is the correct etymology of that name.
